Biographical/Historical:     The Office of the Secretary of State was created in 1845, under the Florida Constitution, to maintain the State's public records. In 1969 the Office of Secretary of State merged with several state agencies to become the Department of State (Chapter 69-106, Laws of Florida). The Secretary and the Department of State administer elections, public records, the Great Seal, and the Administrative Code; issue charters to corporations; and manage the state's library services, archives, cultural affairs, museum, and historic resources. The Secretary is the Chief Cultural Officer and the Chief Protocol Officer of Florida.

Kenneth W. Detzner served as Florida's 33rd Secretary of State from 2012 to 2019, having previously held the office in 2003 in an acting capacity. In January 2012, Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning announced his resignation and Governor Rick Scott appointed Detzner as Browning's successor. After Scott's re-election in 2014, he reappointed Detzner as Secretary of State. Detzner announced his retirement in 2018, coinciding with the gubernatorial election.

Summary:     The series contains the official incoming correspondence of Kenneth Detzner during his tenure as Secretary of State. The correspondence primarily consists of invitations and announcements of cultural and historical events throughout the state, as well as records documenting the Secretary's travel to various events across and outside the state of Florida. The records provide an insight into the multiple areas of involvement for the Secretary of State in Florida, reflecting the official, constitutional and political duties of the Office of Secretary of State.
