Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Department of Transportation (DOT) in 1969 by the reorganization of eight state agencies into one single department to manage Florida's transportation systems (Chapter 69-106, Laws of Florida). The Department oversees and licenses and/or inspects highways, bridges, airports, rail lines, and public transit systems. It conducts research and develops policies for a state comprehensive transportation plan; coordinates the transportation services of government agencies and private sectors; and directs the design, construction, and maintenance of the state highway system.

The Department of Transportation has an extensive organizational structure that consists of several offices and divisions, one of which is the Freight and Multimodal Operations Office (FMO). The office is responsible for developing and implementing the Florida Rail System Plan, rail safety, rail project development/management, rail research and Strategic Intermodal System implementation. The FMO is also responsible for providing leadership, policy guidance and technical assistance to ensure efficient and effective freight movement throughout the state.

Summary:     This series consists of records created and maintained by the Department of Transportation's Freight and Multimodal Operations Office that document the Office's duty to oversee Florida's rail system. The materials in this series are primarily digital copies of maps, including topographic, general highway, GIS and survey maps, and aerial photographs that show various sections of railway throughout the state. Also included are surveys regarding environmental considerations. The records document such high speed and freight railways as the Florida Overland Express (FOX), CSX, Southeast Florida Rail Corridor (SFRC), Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) and TGV Florida.
