Biographical/Historical:   The Cultural Services Department of the City of Tarpon Springs is tasked with preserving the historical narrative of the city and ensuring that residents and tourists have access to its many cultural offerings. Over the years, the Department has applied for and received folklife grants to further examine history and culture unique to Tarpon Springs.

Nikitas Tsimouris, the subject of the Department of Cultural Services' National Endowment for the Arts grant project, was born on the Greek island of Kalymnos in 1924. Tsimouris learned to play the Tsabouna when he was eight years old. Tsimouris and his family emigrated to Tarpon Springs in 1968. The Tsabouna, or a shepherds bagpipe, is a Greek bagpipe-like instrument which is made from the skin of a goat. The bag section of the instrument lasts for only three or four years depending on the amount of play. The instrument has a mouth piece which consists of two pipes with two reeds inside.

Summary:   This series chronicles the efforts of the City of Tarpon Springs to document and preserve traditions of their Greek community through the music of Nikitas Tsimouris through a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Originally awarded to the city in 1993 and completed in 1999, the grant allowed Tarpon Springs to hire a researcher to interview Tsimouris and his family. Included within this series is correspondence, extension requests, project updates, photographs, audio recordings and the final report. Taken together, the records provide insight into the grant process and the efforts of a city to preserve its heritage.
