Biographical/Historical:   The Friends of the Library, Inc. is a support organization for the Alachua County Library District. Created in 1954, the group is staffed by over 80 volunteers and holds two books sales per year to raise funds for library programs as well as their own building upkeep and costs associated with holding their sales. Examples of library programs supported by sale proceeds are: author events, family literacy festivals, scholarships for library employees, a mini-grand program for non-profit groups, contribution to the Foundation's book endowment, the gift of a new book to each Head Start student, the purchase of land for branch library expansions, and the creation of unique adult and children areas within district libraries.

The Friends of the Library office is open for the donation of books, magazines, art prints, records, compact discs, games, puzzles and other ephemera six days a week. This collection of North Central Florida business correspondence was donated to the group as a part of this program. Though materials within the collection point to Patsy Paige as the collector of the materials, the donor as well as their connection to Paige is unknown.

Summary:   This collection is comprised of letters, primarily from North Central Florida, that document local businesses in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The correspondence shows the interests of consumers and the ties between geographic area and industry. While many local businesses are included within the collection, Jacksonville businesses and those in agriculture are the most prevalent.
