Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Clean Energy grant program was one of many energy-related initiatives adopted by the State of Florida under the State Energy Program. The State Energy Program (SEP) provides funding and technical assistance to states to enhance their energy security, encourage state-led initiatives and maximize benefits of decreasing energy waste. The funds for programs like this came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which was signed into law on February 17, 2009, by President Obama. The ultimate goals of the act were to revitalize the economy, create jobs, modernize America's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities and to provide tax relief. This act came on the heels of great financial trouble country-wide in 2008. Florida employed funds from this program through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in their Office of Energy.

The Florida Office of Energy designates state energy policy and develops programs related to energy. The office evaluates energy-related studies and analyses stakeholder input in order to recommend energy policies and programs to the Florida Governor and the legislature that will push Florida towards a more stable and reliable energy portfolio. These programs and policies are funded by both state and federal funds.

Summary:     This series documents the application, review and administration process of Florida Clean Energy grants. The grant applications include proposed budgets, information on the grantee, letters of support and background information on the proposed project. Submitted by universities, schools, museums, local government and other entities, the proposed grants include projects for geothermal energy, greenhouse gas reduction, retrofitting of building and programs to educate and encourage citizens to use renewable energy. These records show local governments' interests and activities concerning clean energy initiatives.
