Biographical/Historical:     John Dawson Gilmary Shea (1824-1892) was an American historian, best known for his contributions and interest in American Roman Catholic history.

Summary:     This collection includes a letter written by John Dawson Gilmary Shea on July 18, 1889 from Elizabeth, New Jersey. The letter discusses a question regarding Oglethorpe's Siege of St. Augustine, Spanish Florida in 1740. Specifically, there is a discussion of an account of the siege that Shea had heard was held in the Conciliar Seminary of Seville in Spain. He regrets to inform the recipient of the letter that he does not have a copy of this account, but that he will write to Seville to obtain more information.
