Biographical/Historical:     John Bellamy (1776-1845) was an enslaver and contractor from South Carolina who settled in Monticello, Florida, on a 18,000-acre labor farm. In 1823, he won a bid to complete the eastern half of a construction project to connect Pensacola to St. Augustine via a singular road. Bellamy was contracted by United States Army Captain Daniel Burch to complete the section between Tallahassee and St. Augustine. The road was completed by enslaved persons from Bellamy's labor farm with the assistance of indigenous guides. The road, which became known as "Bellamy's Road," was completed in May, 1826. While some stretches of Bellamy's Road still exist today, much of it was rendered redundant with the construction of Interstate 10 and Highway 90.

Summary:     This collection includes photostats of a letter from John Bellamy to Brigadier General Thomas S. Jesup, discussing the conclusion of the contracted project.
