Biographical/Historical:     Dr. Edward S. Crill (1843-1915) was a prominent politician and banker in Palatka County, Florida. Dr. Crill was born in Oneida County, New York on December 25, 1843. He earned a medical degree in 1865 at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. He practiced medicine until he ran for political offices. Dr. Crill married his first wife in 1866; she passed away in 1875. He moved to Florida in 1874, finally settling and remarrying in Palatka in 1877.

    Dr. Crill was an active Democrat. He successfully ran for the Florida Senate in 1880, serving one term before his election as State Treasurer from 1885 to 1889. He then served another term as senator before declining reelection. He also served as mayor of Palatka in 1891. Dr. Crill founded the East Florida Savings & Trust Co. in Palatka in 1889, remaining head of the financial institution until his health began to decline about a year before his death. He died on October 23, 1915.

Summary:     This collection consists of ledgers and various correspondence related to Dr. Edward Crill's Florida business ventures and position as State Treasurer. The collection also includes blueprints, pamphlets, and advertisements related to the building of a gas works in Tallahassee between 1887 and 1889, which he received in his capacity as State Treasurer.
