Biographical/Historical:     Miles Blake and his wife, Susan Parish Blake, moved to Tallahassee from North Carolina in 1827. Susan Parish was the daughter of Colonel Richard and Dorothy Parish. Miles and Susan established a labor farm called Blakely in northeast Leon County and had seven children, including Joel Clifton Blake (b. 1831) and Walter R. Blake (b. 1836).

    In 1853, Joel Clifton Blake married Laura A. Parish, the daughter of Alabama labor farmers William G. Parish and Ann E. King, whom are of no relation to Susan Parish Blake. Joel and his mother took over management of Blakely after Miles' death. Joel also acquired a labor farm called Ingleside in 1839, following the death of its previous owner, Colonel Augustus Alston. Brothers Joel and Walter joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and Joel died at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. His widow, Laura, married I. O. Leonard in 1865, who died a few years later.

    Walter R. Blake survived the war and married three times. He married his first wife, Caroline (1837-1868), in Montgomery, Alabama in 1857. He then married his brother's widow, Laura Leonard, in 1871 and she passed away in 1878. Walter's third wife was Rachel E. Blake, who passed away in 1880. Walter died a widower in Tallahassee on May 14, 1910.

Summary:     This collection consists of papers of the Blake family of Leon County, Florida, and the Parish family of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The collection includes Leon County land deeds, letters from the Blake and Parish families, tax receipts, a receipt for the sale of two enslaved Black women (Maria, 48, and her daughter Anakey, 18), and a Union Bank loan.
