Biographical/Historical:     Joseph Pottle Barco (1825-1864) was born in Camden County, Georgia. He later moved to Columbia County, Florida and married Caroline Brooks (b. 1829), daughter of James Brooks and Casandra (?) Osteen, on August 10, 1848, in Providence, Florida. They moved to Marion County in 1852. Barco served as First Lieutenant with Company G, 9th Regiment, Florida Infantry ("Captain Gary's Company"). Union troops captured and imprisoned him near Baldwin, Florida, on February 10, 1864. They moved him through several Union prisons until he died of typhoid malarial fever in Fort Delaware, Delaware, in late July 1864.

Summary:     This collection consists of letters that Joseph P. Barco wrote during his service as a Confederate soldier. These letters discuss domestic issues, the war, and life as a soldier. The collection also includes an inventory of the letters.
