Biographical/Historical:     William John Bailey (1807-1872) was born in Georgia to John Bailey and Elizabeth Rains. He married widow Eliza Ann Williams on 23 January 1844 in Macon, Georgia and they had four children: Virginia Hernandez (Tucker), Christine (Mays), William John, and Burton Bellamy. Eliza had seven children from her previous marriage to Abram Bellamy. William served as a captain in the Florida Mounted volunteers during the Seminole War, earning distinction for his bravery and eventually ranking up to general.

    On 9 March 1847, Bailey acquired the Shehee land grant east of Monticello in Jefferson County. He developed the Lyndhurst labor farm on this property, which primarily produced cotton before and after the Civil War. Bailey primarily sold his agricultural products in Savannah, Georgia, with the help of his intermediary, John L. Villalonga.
