Biographical/Historical:     The United States presidential election of 2000 was the 54th quadrennial presidential election.  The election was held on Tuesday, November 7, 2000.  The contest was between the Democratic candidate Al Gore, the incumbent Vice President, and the Republican candidate George W. Bush, the incumbent governor of Texas and son of former president George H. W. Bush.  George W. Bush narrowly won the election, with 271 electoral votes to Gore's 266 electoral votes.

The election was noteworthy for the unusual event of the winning candidate having received fewer popular votes than the runner-up.  This marked only the fourth election in U.S. history in which the eventual winner failed to win a plurality of the popular vote (after the elections of 1824, 1876, and 1888).

Summary:     This series documents options discussed and decisions made and carried out regarding the disposition of ballots cast in the presidential election of 2000 in Florida. Among the records are correspondence detailing disposition options, a survey given to all Florida supervisors of elections, the final report from the survey results, the 2003 transfer of 5,000 cubic feet of ballots to the State Archives of Florida, and the 2012 destruction of a portion of the ballots following an archival appraisal and approval process. The thorough documentation of the entire process speaks to both the attention to detail and the level of importance placed on this project from start to finish.
