Biographical/Historical:     Viva Florida 500 was a statewide initiative led by the Florida Department of State, under the leadership of Governor Rick Scott. The initiative highlighted the 500 years of historic people, places and events in present-day Florida since the arrival of Juan Ponce de Leon. Viva Florida promoted cultural heritage locations and events around the state. The Department of State worked with several public and private partnerships to achieve the goals of the program, which included strengthening tourism, spurring economic development and educating the world about the state's significant history and heritage.

    The Department worked with international, national, state, local and private partners, including the Spanish, British and French consulates, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the Florida Humanities Council, Espana-Florida Foundation 500 Years, cities, counties, museums, historical sites and memorials. State partners included VISIT FLORIDA, Department of Lottery, Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Department of Business and Professional Regulation and Department of Environmental Protection. In 2013, all 67 counties in Florida reported a Viva Florida event or activity.

    Notable activities included the 450 year anniversary of Pensacola (2009),  the 50 year anniversary since the enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act (2014), the 450 year anniversary of the settlement of Fort Caroline in Jacksonville (2014), the 500 year anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon's arrival on Florida's east coast (2015), the 450 year anniversary of St. Augustine as the nation's oldest continuously occupied city (2015), and Victory Florida, a campaign commemorating the 70th anniversary of V-Day, or Victory Day (2015).

Summary:     This series documents the activities, events and administration of Viva Florida 500, a statewide initiative led by the Florida Department of State, from 2002 to 2015. The bulk of the records are from 2013 to 2015. The series includes correspondence, meeting and teleconference materials, financial records, travel records, exhibit records, outreach, marketing and advertisement materials, strategic plans and assessments, website records, proposals, proclamations, resolutions, newsletters, licensing agreements, legal records, grants files and a promotional video. The meeting and teleconference materials consist of sign-in sheets, handouts, presentation materials, feedback and minutes. The exhibit records, which include initial and reviewed scripts and design development records, document the creation of museum and traveling exhibits pertaining to the themes of Viva Florida 500. The marketing and advertisement materials include op-eds, advertisements, briefing inserts, press releases and social media plans. The website records document the creation of project's website including discussions on the initial design and updates, partner requests and user analytics. The grant files consist of applications, financial records and acceptance and requisition documents.

    The projects and events documented in the series include Expedition Florida 500, replicas of the Nao Victoria and El Galeon Tall Ships, Daytona Viva Florida 500, the 70th Anniversary of D-Day Normandy Land of Liberty, the French Heritage Trail, French Week, the royal visit of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, the Spanish Trade Mission, the Statewide Time Capsule and Victory Florida. The series documents partnerships with the Florida Historical Commission, the National Underground Railroad, the Florida Anthropological Society, Enterprise Florida, Guy Harvey, the Florida Humanities Council, the St. Augustine 450 Federal Commission, the Florida Channel, the Florida Virtual School, the Florida Association of Counties, the Florida Historical Society, Puerto Rico, Great Britain, France and Spain. The series also documents partnerships with other state agencies, including the Executive Office of the Governor, VISIT FLORIDA, Department of Lottery, Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Department of Business and Professional Regulation and Department of Environmental Protection.
