Biographical/Historical:     Between December 1894 and February 1895, Florida suffered two freezes that devastated the state's citrus industry. The first freeze on December 29, 1894 destroyed fruit trees and vegetable crops. The second freeze from February 7-9, 1895 took out many more of the surviving but weakened citrus trees.

Summary:     This collection consists of a letter from H. Pifer, a citrus grower in Yalaha, Florida (Lake County), to Messrs. Esmond and Ward in Newburgh, New York. Pifer discusses the freeze that occurred on the night of December 29, 1894 and its devastating effect on Florida's agriculture and economy. As a result, Pifer requests his investors to bear part of the monetary burden of rebuilding his citrus grove. In making his case, Pifer also compares the varied economy of northern states to the singular citrus-focused production in Florida.
