Biographical/Historical:     The Board of Pharmacy for the State of Florida was established in 1889 to regulate the practice of pharmacy in cities and towns of more than 200 inhabitants and the sale of poisons (1889, Ch. 3880, Laws).The board consisted of five prominent pharmacists from the state who were appointed by the Governor. The board had power to make bylaws and regulations and create auxiliary boards. In 1951, the Florida Board of Pharmacy was established (1951, Ch. 28150, Laws) to license pharmacists, revoke or suspend licenses, create rules and regulations to carry out their duties, and inspect retail drug establishments.

    The State Board of Pharmacy was established in 1979 within the Department of Professional Regulation (Ch. 79-226, Laws). The board consisted of seven members appointed by the Governor; five were licensed pharmacists and two were residents of the state who had never been licensed as pharmacists. With the creation of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in 1994, the board was established within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance (Ch. 94-218, Laws). In 1997, the Board of Pharmacy was established within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance in the Department of Health (Ch. 97-264, Laws). The board consisted of nine member appointed by the governor; seven were licensed pharmacists and two were residents of the state who had never been licensed as pharmacists. The Board is responsible for the licensure, monitoring and education of pharmacy professionals to assure competency and safety to practice in their service.

Summary:     The series contains the minutes of the State Board of Pharmacy (1944-1992; 1995; 2002-2004; 2006-2008). There are gaps in the paper records from 1992 to 1995, from 1995 to 2002 and from 2002 to 2006. The minutes document the topics of discussion, decisions made and actions taken by the Board.

    From 1995 to 2006, the records also consist of agendas, notes, meeting materials and minutes for the Board of Pharmacy, conferences and meetings on healthcare administration and pharmaceuticals, rule workshops and committees, Probable Cause Panels, ESO Conference Calls, and the Agency for Health Care Administration. The series also includes audio records of the meetings from 2001 to 2008.
