Biographical/Historical:     In 1965, Florida Governor Hayden Burns announced the planning of a conference to analyze and discuss the state of Florida's education system, a chance for laypersons and professional educators to identify issues and offer recommendations. The Governor's Conference on Education, held February 24-25, 1966 in Tampa, was the first of its kind in the state and more than 1,400 people attended.

The conference Steering Committee divided attendees into nine interest groups, or sub-committees: 1) Buildings and Equipment, 2) Communications, 3) Dollars, 4) Education for Employment, 5) Learning, 6) Personnel Needs, 7) Relationships, 8) Services, and 9) Values. Each group had a consultant who served as a resource person during the group's discussions. The Buildings and Equipment group focused on the future construction of school facilities; Communications discussed methods of communication within school systems and outside media (such as education television); Dollars focused on finance and money management; Education for Employment looked at vocational and technical programs as well as post-graduate education; Learning focused on ways to improve instructional practices. The Personnel Needs group discussed the needs of and for personnel; Relations focused on the connections between federal, state, and local governments, as well as private colleges and universities and parochial schools; Services considered before, during, and after school programs, and the various needs of students; and Values discussed how Florida's education system reflects the values of society.

Summary:     This series consists of records documenting the planning and execution of the first Governor's Conference on Education in Florida. The records include correspondence with the governor, steering committee, and attendees; group reports and recommendations; conference schedule program and outline; governor's remarks to the conference; and follow-up reports. There is brief discussion of school integration in Florida and the need to connect with underserved Black populations. The series also includes 19 rolls of motion picture films that document the Conference. The films are 16mm reel-to-reels.
