Biographical/Historical:     In 1971, President Nixon halted construction of the Cross Florida Barge Canal on grounds that it was destroying the environment. In early 1974, Federal Judge Harvey Johnsen ruled that Nixon had no authority to halt the congressionally approved project, but said new environmental and economic studies must be held to justify it before work could be resumed. He then ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform a restudy of existing ecological, biological, socioeconomic, and other environmental data relating to the Cross Florida Barge Canal project.

The Interagency Coordinating Group was responsible for cooperatively reviewing and providing feedback throughout the restudy process. The group comprised of members representing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of the Interior (Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, U.S. Geological Survey), U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Department of Natural Resources, Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission, Canal Authority of Florida, and Florida Department of Administration.

Summary:     The records in this series, created during the United States Army Corps of Engineers large-scale restudy of the Cross Florida Barge Canal's effects, document the potential land use and environmental impact of the canal through biological, demographic, ecological, and socioeconomic analyses. This series contains restudy reports by the Corps of Engineers, comments on the reports by the various national and state agencies of the Interagency Coordinating Group, and correspondence between the participating agencies.
