Biographical/Historical:     The Division of Historical Resources is part of the Florida Department of State's Office of Cultural, Historical and Information Programs (OCHIP) in the Office of the Secretary of State. The Division was created in 1986 (Chapter 86-183, Laws), assuming some of the functions of the Division of Archives, History and Records Management. The Division is mandated to preserve historical, cultural and archaelogical resources for the state of Florida. The Division includes the Bureau of Historic Preservation, the Bureau of Archaeological Research and the Director's Office.

The Florida Historical Commission, a seven member panel, was established by the Florida Legislature in 2001. The Commission's responsibilities and requirements for membership are set forth in Section 267.0612, Florida Statutes to enhance public participation and involvement in the preservation and protection of the state's historic and archaeological sites and properties. The Commission advises and assists the Division of Historical Resources in carrying out their programs, duties and responsibilities. There were several predecessors to the Florida Historical Commission including:  the Historic Preservation Advisory Council, created in 1983 by the Florida Legislature in Chapter 83-103, Laws of Florida and amended in 1987 by Chapter 87-33, Laws of Florida; and the Bureau of Historic Sites and Properties Advisory Council, established in 1967 by Chapter 67-50, Section 6, Laws of Florida.

Summary:     This series documents the development and implementation of historic preservation activities of the Historic Preservation Commission and its predecessor agencies the Bureau of Historic Sites and Properties Advisory Council (1971-1979) and the Historic Preservation Advisory Council (1983-2001). The series includes agendas, correspondence, minutes, press releases, newspaper clippings, grant rankings and funding recommendations, project proposals, and state and federal grant applications and background materials.

For the years documenting the Bureau of Historic Sites and Properties Advisory Council (1971-1979) and the Florida Historical Commission (2002-2007), the series includes only audio tapes. The bulk of the series documents the preservation activities of the Historic Preservation Advisory Council from 1983-2001, including both paper files and audio tapes. The series also contains two cubic feet of records detailing the activities of the Study Commission on African American History in Florida and the Florida Black Heritage Trail and Guidebook.
