Biographical/Historical:     On November 11, 1942, the existing health departments within Dade County were consolidated to form the Dade County Health Unit.  Durings its first year, the Department had a roster of employees totaled 81, including part time clinicians, but wartime conditions made it difficult to find and keep adequately trained personnel.

When the Florida Legislature dissolved the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and created the Department of Health (Laws of Florida 96-403) in 1996, the Dade County Health Unit became the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade.

Summary:     This series consists of eight videos of oral histories by former Miami-Dade County public health workers, conducted between 2007 and 2013.  The public health workers included nurses, program managers and other employees who were involved in public health emergencies or actively participated in the expansion and improvement of public health in the county. Discussing milestones in public health in Miami-Dade County during the years 1960 to 2013, the interviewees discussed their experiences and accomplishments in public health in areas related to nursing, environmental health, medical laboratory, public health law, school health, planning and evaluation of public health services, public health administration, and public health preparedness after the September 11 Terrorist Attacks.

Those interviewed include:
    1) Annie R. Neasman - Executive Administrator FDOH-Miami-Dade.
    2) Dick Strait - Administrative Director/Finances.
    3) Dwight Frasier - Director State Lab.
    4) Leah Kinnaird - Public Health Nurse Leader.
    5) Morton Laitner - Chief Legal Counsel.
    6) Orville Blake - Public Health Planner.
    7) Pamela Toomer - Public Health Nursing Leader.
    8) Wally Livingston - Environmental Health Leader.
