Biographical/Historical:     The World War II Memorial Project developed as a result of the 1999 Florida World War II Veterans Memorial Act (Laws of Florida, Chapter 1999-160) which provided for the construction of a memorial dedicated to Floridians who served in World War II. The project was headed by the Florida Commission on Veterans' Affairs and supported by related state agencies. A subsequent act relating to trust funds (Laws of Florida, Chapter 1999-161) created the Florida World War II Veterans Memorial Matching Trust Fund within the Department of Veterans' Affairs to be used for project related expenditures.

In January 2000, the Commission on Veterans' Affairs, an advising counsel to the Department of Veterans' Affairs and liaison between the state and veterans' organizations within the state, reached out to Secretary of State Katherine Harris to identify a Department of State representative to participate in the project. Dr. Janet Matthews, Director of the Division of Historical Resources, was selected by the Secretary and continued to work closely with the Department of Veterans' Affairs through the project's entirety.

In addition to the memorial, the project included both a traveling and permanent exhibit at the Museum of Florida History, applicable educational curriculum and promotional resources for school aged children and adults, a Florida Heritage Trail guidebook, and a webpage.  The Department of Education and the Department of State's Museum of Florida History and State Library and Archives provided assistance with these auxiliary goals.

Though the Act specified an initial construction deadline of June 30, 2005, the memorial was completed and officially dedicated in a ceremony on December 7, 2001.

Summary:     This series documents the Division of Historical Resources' activities as a part of the World War II Memorial Project from 2000-2002. The chronological arrangement illustrates the progression of the project from the budget and planning phase to the memorial dedication.  The venture required extensive collaboration between the Division of Historical Resources, the Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the Governor's Office. This is apparent through correspondence, status reports and meeting notes that cover each stage of the project.  Of particular interest are the budget, expenditure and correspondence files, which show the financial fluctuation of the project in terms of dollars allocated, fundraising sources and marketing strategies.
