Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Citrus Commission within the Department of Citrus is an executive agency of state government established in 1935 by an act of the Florida Legislature as the result of an industry request. The act, called the Florida Citrus Code, 601 Florida Statutes, states that the department's purpose is to protect and enhance the quality and reputation of Florida citrus fruit and processed citrus products in both domestic and foreign markets. It also acts to "protect the health and welfare and stabilize and protect the citrus industry of the state," which in turn helps to promote the general welfare and social and political economy of the state.

The Florida Citrus Commission is the agency head and serves in the capacity of a board of directors for the Department of Citrus. The commission consists of 12 members appointed by the Governor of Florida and confirmed by the Senate for three-year terms. Members must be citrus growers, packers or processors. The Department of Citrus carries out commission policy and acts as the commission's staff by conducting a wide variety of programs involving industry regulation, scientific, market and economic research, advertising, merchandising, public and industry relations and consumer promotions.

Summary:     This series contains the official minutes and recordings of meetings of the Florida Citrus Commission, its committees and advisory councils. This series documents the topics of discussion, decisions made and actions taken by the Commission and committees regarding policies; budgets; rules and regulations, and amendments to regulations of the citrus fruit industry; and committee recommendations and reports. Topics of discussion include: promoting Florida citrus fruit and grapefruit to domestic and international market, funding of citrus canker eradication programs, and development of processed frozen concentrated orange juice. Starting from 1985, summary reports are attached to the minutes that briefly summarize the actions taken by the Commission and the committees.

This series also includes supplemental minute books containing supporting documentation such as notices of meetings and public hearings, Commission and committee agenda, attachments of orders and amendments, and rulemaking. The series also contains audio cassette tapes and compact disks with recordings of the meetings beginning in 1989.
