Biographical/Historical:     The Bureau of Criminal Justice Programs is a program within the Department of Legal Affairs'  Division of Victim Services and Criminal Justice Programs. The Bureau  provides statewide public education and training programs relating to crime prevention, school based officers, victim advocacy  and services, and related criminal justice areas. Training is provided through the Florida Crime Prevention Training Institute (FCPTI), established in the Department in 1982 to provide crime prevention training to Florida's law enforcement community and other interested citizens. Under the Bureau's Urban League Grant Program, Urban League agencies provide programs and services aimed toward statewide crime prevention and intervention in general, and reducing black-on-black crime in particular. These programs are operated in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Tallahassee, Tampa, and West Palm Beach.

Summary:     This series documents crime prevention programs conducted by the Florida Consortium of Urban League Affiliates under grants administered by the Bureau of Criminal Justice Programs. The series includes agreements between the State of Florida and the Consortium under which Urban League agencies provide programs and services aimed toward statewide crime prevention and intervention in general, with an emphasis on reducing violent crime in African-American communities. The series also includes quarterly and final evaluation reports detailing the programs, activities, progress, outcomes, and expenditures under each grant, as well as audit reports and financial statements of the programs and the agencies conducting them.

    Among the programs and activities documented in this series are:

      - programs aimed to serve as a deterrent to criminal activity among at-risk youth
      - crime prevention discussion workshops involving citizens, law enforcement, and others
      - parenting skills training
      - tutoring for youth
      - job search preparedness skills training
      - job placement services
      - programs aimed at deterring first-time offenders from re-offending
      - programs to increase awareness of and citizen resistance to black-on-black crime
