The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     The State Library Board was created on June 4, 1925 by an act of the Legislature.  The first three-member board was appointed in 1927 (Ch. 10278, Laws).  It was charged with administering the State Library.  The State Library pursued the collection of many historical documents and manuscripts related to Florida.  The Depository Service was initiated in 1931 to receive material of archival importance and in 1935 State Librarian William T. Cash became the Director of the WPA Archives Survey for Florida.
    Dorothy Dodd was appointed the first State Archivist for Florida in 1941.  The archives was not distinct from the State Library at this time and the State Archivist was considered a part of the State Library Board.  The State Library was authorized to receive many historical records from state offices in 1943, greatly increasing the holdings of the archives.  Dodd succeeded Cash as State Librarian in 1952.
Summary:     This series consists of the correspondence and subject files of State Archivist Dorothy Dodd (1902-1994) from 1941 to 1951.  The general correspondence (1941-1951) and subject files (1942-1950) document the collection of historical materials related to Florida and include references requests as well as references to sources of Floridiana.
