Biographical/Historical:     The State Library Board (Ch. 10277, Laws) became the Florida Library and Historical Commission on May 14, 1963 by an act of the Legilsature (Ch. 63-39, Laws).  That act changed the name of the Board and enlarged its membership.  The Commission retained the duty of the earlier Board to administer the State Library and was also mandated to administer the historical archives established by the 1963 act.
    The new seven member Commission absorbed the Civil War Centennial Commission (Ch. 61-404, Laws) and its members.  For several years following this change, both the members of the Commission and the public frequently referred to the Commission as the "Library Board."  Chairman of the Civil War Centennial Commission Adam G. Adams, assumed chairmanship of the Library and Historical Commission.  The Library and Historical Commission assumed the reposnsibilities of the Civil War Centennial Commission which was originally created by an act of the Legislature to develop and coordinate plans and methods of commemorating the centennial of the Civil War.
Summary:     This series consists of the correspondence and subject files of Adam G. Adams, Chairman of the Library and Historical Commission from 1958 to 1969. The series includes records created by the Civil War Centennial Commission which was absorbed by the Library and Historical Commission in 1963.
    The records of the Library and Historical Commission document the duty of the Chairman and the Library Commission to administer the State Library.  The records include correspondence, memoranda, reports, and publications regarding the administration of the Library.  The records of the Civil War Centennial Commission document the activities of the Commission, the celebration of the Centennial, and the publication of the Commission's newsletter and book,  "Florida One Hundred Years Ago."
