Biographical/Historical:     An Executive Order on March 28, 1956 established the State Land Use and Control Commission to recommend policies and possible legislation for the management of state lands in the public interest.  The Trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund authorized Governor LeRoy Collins to appoint a five-member citizen commission which consisted of the following members: Mercer Brown, St. Petersburg; J. Ollie Edmunds, Deland; Mrs. John R. Parkinson, Daytona Beach; Richard H. Hunt, Miami; and Mayor C.P. Mason, Pensacola. Mercer Brown was appointed the chairman. The first meeting of the Commission was held on April 24, 1956, in Tallahassee.

The Commission was given a wide-range of authorities and duties. Responsibilities included inventorying all state-owned land; recommending a plan and policies for the sale or withholding from sale of state-owned lands; and for the development of future state parks and other public facilities. The Commission worked with departments and agencies of the State of Florida and reported their activities, progress, and recommendations to the Trustees.  The dredging and filling in Boca Ciega Bay became the Commission's main concern.  The lack of staff and budgetary support hindered the Commission from continuing with its mission. After twelve meetings, the Commission met for the last time on January 23, 1958.
Summary:     This series documents the operations and activities of the Commission.  The files include correspondence, budgetary information, agendas, minutes, resolutions, reports, reference materials, legal documents, newspaper clippings, and project files.  The correspondence is between Commission members, concerned citizens, and government officials regarding proposed projects and activities. The records on projects relate to conducting the inventory of state-owned lands and of fresh water lakes.
