Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) with enactment of the Juvenile Justice Act of 1994 (Chapter 94-209, Laws of Florida). The newly created agency absorbed the powers, funding and personnel of the HRS Division of Youth Services, and also assumed responsibility for overseeing juvenile delinquency cases and children and families in need of services (CINS/FINS) cases. DJJ is headed by a Secretary appointed by the governor and who shares leadership duties with the Deputy Secretary.

    The Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida, opened as the Florida State Reform School in 1900 under the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions. It was a high-risk residential commitment facility for male youth 13 to 21 years of age who were committed by the Court. In 1914 the name changed to the Florida Industrial School for Boys, then the Florida School for Boys in 1957. From 1967 until its closure in 2011, the school was called the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in honor of its first superintendent.

Summary:     This series contains the listing of all juvenile offenders received into the Florida School for Boys, also known as the Dozier School for Boys, from 1915 until its closing in 2011. The ledgers include the name, sex, race, age, birth state, offense, sentence, dates of arrival and release, whether they escaped (date of escape and recapture if any), prison identification number, and the manner of termination of residence; i.e., end of sentence, pardon, death, etc.
