Biographical/Historical:     The United States declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898, retroactive to April 21st. The federal government requested each state provide troops in proportion to their populations; Florida was to provide one infantry regiment consisting of 12 companies. All 20 companies of Florida State Troops volunteered and went to the staging area in Tampa where 12 companies were chosen and the rest sent home.

    In July of 1898, the troops went to Fernandina; in August, they transferred to Huntsville, Alabama. There, eight companies were discharged and returned to Florida. By January 1899, the remaining four companies were discharged. A battalion of Florida troops, Company C, did serve in Cuba as a part of the Third U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment. At least 28 men died of disease while in service.

Summary:     The series contains volumes of photostatic copies of muster rolls and pay accounts for Florida's companies who served during the Spanish-American War. The muster rolls and pay accounts include the name and rank of soldier; when, where, and by whom they reported for duty and enrollment; when, where, and by whom they mustered into service; when last paid; travelling (place of residence and place of discharge); subsistence and forage furnished by themselves since mustered into service; valuation of horses, equipment, and clothing; monies due United States (arms and equipment, QM stores and equipment); remarks; balance paid to the soldier; and from whom they received payment.
