Biographical/Historical:     The Agency for Health Care Administration was established in 1992 (Ch. 92-33, Laws).  It administers the state's medicaid program, licenses and regulates health care facilities and health maintenance organizations, addresses complaints for the state's health care practitioners, and publishes health care data and statistics.  In 2000 (Ch. 2000-305, Laws) it was created as a Department.
Summary:     This series consists of correspondence between Executive Director Douglas Cook and healthcare professionals, constituents, legislators, physicians, business leaders, and insurance professionals.  Cook served as the Executive Director for the Agency for Health Care Administration during the administration of Governor Lawton Chiles.  The correspondence documents issues related to the healthcare profession, such as healthcare planning; health insurance; health maintenance organization coverage and denials; living wills; nursing home reporting systems; abortions; healthcare reform measures and proposals; hospital/physician complaints; quality of care in healthcare facilities; elderly care; rising insurance premiums; cost of medications and price controls; healthcare for disabled individuals; childhood obesity; extended long-term care; medicaid; medical care availability; pre-existing health conditions; and rising medical care costs.  This series also contains letters of recommendation; thank you letters; employment inquiries/opportunities; letters of appointment; and letters of condolence.
    Box 5 in this series consists of correspondence, subject and reading files relating to various healthcare issues such as aging with dignity; chronic care; healthcare and insurance reform; managed care; stroke guidelines; hospital closures; and changes in medical insurance providers.
