Biographical/Historical:     In 1996, the Florida Legislature dissolved the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and created the Department of Health (DOH), whose mission is to promote and protect the health and safety of Florida residents by establishing and maintaining high quality standards for the public health environment and the delivery of public health services. The DOH is responsible for children's medical services and all public health services for which the state has authority, and matters related thereto (Laws of Florida 96-403). In addition, through the Division of Medical Quality Assurance (MQA), the DOH offers many services to licensees, health care businesses, citizens and visitors to Florida, and serves as the principle administrative unit for the Florida Board of Medicine.

Formed in 1905 as the Regular Board of Medical Examiners, the Board is responsible for determining the competence of licensed medical practitioners and for reviewing the practices of licensed physicians. The current Board of Medicine consists of fifteen members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate.

Summary:     This series contains minutes of the Board of Medical Examiners meetings in which they discussed the processes and results of medical licensure examinations, heard petitions and complaints from physicians regarding their licenses, discussed the enforcement of statutes regulating the practice of medicine, and oversaw various other administrative issues. There is a seventeen-year gap in these records from 1980 to 1997, during which time the Board changed its name to the Board of Medicine.
