The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical: The post of Secretary of State was created in the 1838 Constitution (Article III, Section 14, 1838 Constitution; Article IV, Section 21, 1885 Constitution; Article IV, Section 4(b), 1968 Constitution; Ch. 15 FS).  The Secretary of State was the successor to the Secretary of the Territory.  The Office of Secretary of State was created in 1845 to maintain the state's public records. In 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws), the Office of Secretary of State became part of the Dept. of State.  The post of Secretary of State was one of the elected Cabinet posts until January 3, 2003, the effective date of a 1998 constitutional amendment eliminating the office from the Cabinet and making the department responsible to the governor, with the Secretary of State position a gubernatorial appointment.
Summary:     This series consists primarily of invitations asking for the Secretary of State's attendance to a wide range of functions. The functions include political and judicial ceremonies, academic and civic fundraisers, corporate ribbon cutting ceremonies, meetings and dinners with a variety of dignitaries, and various charity and church proceedings. The series further contains the secretary's daily schedules along with agendas, correspondence, emails, transportation, travel itineraries, and lodging information pertaining to the assorted functions to which the secretary was invited.
