Biographical/Historical:     In 1957, the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions created the Department of Corrections, then titled the Division of Corrections, to manage all state prisons (Ch. 57-317, Laws of Florida).  The name changed to Department of Corrections in 1978 (Ch. 78-53, Laws). Since 1975, the Department has overseen all agencies providing incarceration and rehabilitative services for adult offenders and, until the 1994 establishment of the Department of Juvenile Justice, for youth offenders as well.  The Department administers institutional and non-institutional programs; inspects all county, state, and municipal correctional and detention facilities; and operates over 50 prisons as well as work camps, work release centers (formerly called community correctional centers), road prisons, forestry camps, boot camps, and a drug treatment center.

Summary:     This series contains correspondence from Lloyd W. Griffiths, Director of the State Road Department (SRD) Prison System. The SRD Prison System consisted of approximately 36 State Road Prisons that housed inmates assigned to maintenance on Florida's roads. This series consists of correspondence with members of the Florida Parole Commission about paroled inmates from State Road Prisons; to wardens of State Road Prisons (primarily Warden E. E. Page of State Road Prison #4760) regarding their duties, inmates, and administrative concerns; and with various engineers, medical staff, and transfer agents that discuss working inmates.
