Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Military Department in 1921 (Chapter 8502, Laws of Florida). The head of the department was the Adjutant General, and its headquarters were in St. Augustine. The Military Department and the Adjutant General controlled the Florida units of the National Guard; supervised all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transported and supported any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Military Department became the Department of Military Affairs in 1973 (Ch 73-93, Laws). The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws).

Summary:     This series contains unit information cards that document the evolution of Florida's military forces from 1893 to 1960. The unit information cards cover three periods: pre-World War II, 1890s-1940s (Florida State Militia, Florida State Troops, and Florida National Guard); World War II, 1941-1947 (Florida State Guard); and post-World War II, 1940s-1960s. The unit cards in each period contain information on the creation of the unit, any organizational changes, names of commanding officers, and any active state or federal service performed. A less extensive file provides information on the units of the Florida Air National Guard from the 1940s to 1960s.

The location cards illustrate the same information but focus on the geographic location within the state where each unit was raised and served. These location cards are most complete from 1890 through the 1950s. The staff of the Military Department created these cards during a project in 1968.
