Biographical/Historical:     In 1929, the Florida Legislature created the Okeechobee Flood Control District to control and regulate the waters of Lake Okeechobee through a system of canals, levees, dams, locks, and reservoirs (Chapter 13711, Laws of Florida). This was in response to the massive flooding that occurred during the 1926 and 1928 hurricanes. The Okeechobee Flood Control District coordinated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build a system of levees around the lake in the 1930s. In 1949 the Florida Legislature created the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District, the predecessor to the South Florida Water Management District, and consolidated the Everglades Drainage District and the Okeechobee Flood Control District under it.

Summary:     This collection consists of both black-and-white prints and photonegatives of the Lake Okeechobee Drainage Areas originally collected by the Amelia Island Museum of History in Fernandina.
