Emilie Blackburn was born in Tallahassee on July 5, 1906, to Alfred Bernard Blackburn Sr. (1870-1916) and Fannie Blake Byrd (1868-1914). Emilie attended Florida State College for Women from 1925 to 1929, where she earned a degree in education. As a FSCW student, Emilie joined the Kappa Delta sorority, along with three of her sisters - Fannie, Bessie, and Edith; five cousins - Janet, Clifton, Elizabeth, Kate, and Rubie Byrd; and a third cousin, Mary Simpson Yarbrough. Emilie Blackburn was a public school teacher, ran a boarding house, and spent some time in Bremerhaven, Germany. She passed away April 19, 2001 in St. Johns County.
Corinne Turnbull Yarbrough, daughter of Theodore Turnbull (1842-1896) and Mary Simpson (1845-1889), was born in Leon County on November 29, 1864. She is the second cousin, once removed, of Emilie Blackburn, related through Richard C. Parish, grandfather of Corinne and great-grandfather of Emilie. When Corinne was a child, a Black nursemaid named Creasy Lloyd cared for her. Creasy was from Narcoossee, Florida, and was reportedly nearing 100 years of age when she died on January 26, 1930.
