Biographical/Historical:     Fort Jefferson was built on Garden Key in the Florida Keys in 1847 to protect the southern coastline of the United States and the lifeline of commerce to and from the Mississippi River. During the Civil War the fort began to be used as a prison for deserters and other criminals, most notably Dr. Samuel Mudd, who was sentenced to life in prison for conspiracy in the assassination of President Lincoln. The site eventually became part of Dry Tortugas National Park.

Loggerhead Key is the largest island in the Dry Tortugas and has long been a haven for wildlife. The Carnegie Marine Biological Laboratory operated on Loggerhead Key from 1904 to 1939. Although uninhabited, the island has a few small structures and a lighthouse and receives visitors as part of Dry Tortugas National Park.

Summary:     This collection consists of photographs of Fort Jefferson and nearby Loggerhead Key. Ornithologists took these images while banding terns in the area. Some of the images show banding of sooty terns and noddy terns, as well as other bird life. The collection also includes two small images of The Columns, a historic home in Tallahassee, Florida.
