Biographical/Historical:     On May 18, 1539, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto landed on the shores of what is now Tampa Bay in Pinellas County, Florida. There he found what he thought to be the legendary Fountain of Youth, a series of five mineral springs. Believing in the healing quality of the waters, de Soto named the area Espiritu Santo Springs, or "Springs of the Holy Spirit."

Over the centuries, the legendary healing powers of Espiritu Santo Spring continued to draw visitors. In the 1920s, Confederate veteran John F. Tucker and his family purchased the surrounding land and built the Safety Harbor Sanatorium and the Espiritu Santo Springs Hotel.

Summary:     This collection consists of three photographs of Espiritu Santo Springs in Safety Harbor (Pinellas County), Florida. Three images, two from 1907 and one undated, depict a family visiting the springs and sitting near the pavilion. There is also one undated image of an unidentified high school building.
