Biographical/Historical:     Florida State University, one of the largest and oldest of the nine institutions of higher learning in the State University System of Florida, had its beginning in 1851 when the Florida Legislature established two seminaries. In February 1857, the institution began offering postsecondary instruction to male students at the Seminary west of the Suwannee River. The following year it became coeducational when it merged with the Tallahassee Female Academy. By 1897 the institution had evolved into the first liberal arts college in the state, and in 1901 it became Florida State College, a four-year institution. In 1905 the University of Florida was established and designated a men's school, and the Florida State College became a women's school called the Florida Female College. In 1909 the name of the college changed to Florida State College for Women. In 1947, the Florida State College for Women returned to coeducational status and renamed The Florida State University.

Dorothy Dodd was the daughter of Dr. William Dodd, a teacher at FSCW, and a former student at the school. She was later appointed Florida's first State Archivist in 1941 and served as State Librarian from 1952 until 1965. Dr. Dodd published numerous scholarly articles and books about Florida, and in 1986 was inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame in 1986.

Summary:     This collection contains images collected by former Florida State College for Women (FSCW) student Dorothy Dodd for a (now dismantled) scrapbook. Images are primarily of student activities such as track and field competition, swimming, plays, dances, and recreational outings to Camp Flastawoco at Lake Bradford and the coast. Of interest are images detailing the junior-senior wedding ceremony, an FSCW tradition until 1927 wherein juniors dressed as bridesmaids and groomsmen, and the seniors dressed as brides and grooms. Also included are images of the campus buildings and a few of the faculty, including Dodd's father, Dr. William Dodd, and Dr. Edward Conradi.
