Biographical/Historical:     Wauchula is the county seat of Hardee County, Florida, incorporated in 1902. In 1856, during the Third Seminole War, Lieutenant George L. Hartsuff of the Second Artillery, United States Army, established Fort Hartsuff. The fort served as a refuge for the few pioneer families in the area, one of which was the McEwen family. In 1886, the Florida Southern Railway built a depot near the expanding community near Fort Harstuff and named the town Wachula.

Summary:     This collection consists of black-and-white images from a dismantled photographic scrapbook created by Wauchula resident Virginia McEwen, wife of bank manager John C. McEwen. Most of the images are of John McEwen, his family, home, and the bank he ran, the Bank of Wauchula. Other images depict a Memorial Day parade and the residence of J. W. Earnest.
