Biographical/Historical:     In 1843, Augustus Steele claimed Depot Key, on the edge of Levy County, Florida, under the U.S. Armed Occupation Act of 1842 and renamed it Atsena Otie Key. He built summer cottages for wealthy tourists, and in 1845 established the Cedar Key post office. The area's stands of juniper trees, which in 1855 attracted the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company, were mistaken for cedar, leading to the town's eventual name. In 1896, after a hurricane struck the town, the settlement moved further inland. The town focused on the seafood industry and by the 1960s had become a tourist attraction. By 1989, most of the town was on the National Register of Historical Places as the Cedar Key Historical and Archaeological District.

In 1977, a group of citizens formed the Cedar Key Historical Society to preserve and foster interest in the town's history. The Society opened a museum in 1979 in the Lutterloh house and originally collected and exhibited these photographs in their museum.

Summary:     This collection consists of 18 black-and-white images of Cedar Key including the docks, various buildings and businesses, homes, and social events.
