Biographical/Historical:     Carl Edward Burleson (1887-1961) was the chief civil engineer for Pinellas County. Born in Tennessee, he studied civil engineering at Milligan College. He spent several years with various railroad companies, including the Norfolk & Western Railroad, designing tunnels and ravine passes. In 1909 he relocated to Florida to build the Tampa Northern, a proposed road from Tampa to Waycross, Georgia. However, due to budget issues, the road ended at Brooksville, approximately 50 miles north of Tampa. Burleson remained in Florida building roads and bridges, including the Gandy and Safety Harbor bridges. On September 17 1917, he became chief civil engineer for Pinellas County.

Summary:     This collection consists of road and bridge photographs taken by civil engineer Carl E. Burleson, mostly in Pinellas County. Included are images of Clearwater, Seminole Bridge, Lake Butler Road, and various unidentified roads. Also included are several images of various road crews and a few images of Burleson. Of interest are several images of the aftermath of the 1921 hurricane in Safety Harbor.
