Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Marine Patrol's primary objective was to police and guide the waterways off the Florida coast. Their responsibility was to enforce regulations regarding speeding, boat licenses, recreation laws, and drug running enforcement. The Marine Patrol was established in the 1930s as the Shrimp Regulation Board.

The Department of Natural Resources was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws), combining the functions of the State Board of Conservation; the Canal Authority; the Commission on Marine Sciences and Technology; the Florida Keys Aqueduct Commission; the Board of Parks and Historic Memorials; the Outdoor Recreational Development Council; the Board of Drainage Commissioners; and the Suwannee River Development Authority.  In 1975, the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund also became part of the Dept. of Natural Resources (Ch. 75-22, Laws). ,  The Department was responsible for the administration, supervision, development, and conservation of the natural resources of Florida.  The Governor and Cabinet headed the Department and appointed an Executive Director who managed the Department. The 1993 Legislature combined the Dept. of Environmental Regulation with the Dept. of Natural Resources into a new Dept. of Environmental Protection (Ch. 93-213, Laws). The Florida Marine Patrol, the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, the Florida Marine Research Institute and the Office of Fisheries Management and Assistance Services of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection all merged to form the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on July 1, 1999 as required by an amendment to the Florida Constitution.

Summary:     This series documents the major functions, activities, and operations of the Florida Marine Patrol.  The records include manuals, correspondence, memoranda, reports, publications, and photos concerning the conservation of Florida's natural resources, development of water resources, control of state lands, coastal zone management, fishery management, and environmental policy. Among the records are photographs of individual officers, groups, training centers and sessions, vessels, marine life, boat safety checks, illegal drugs and other materials acquired from boats, arrests, and recreation time with the officers. Filmstrips, audio cassettes and video cassettes (VHS) include training recordings, publicity interviews, instructional recordings, and documentaries.
