Biographical/Historical:     During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many people believed that South Florida's wetlands could be drained simply by digging canals, and that the new, dry land would be remarkably fertile. In 1913, the Florida Legislature established the Everglades Drainage District to drain and reclaim lands located near the Everglades for agricultural and sanitary purposes (Chapter 6456, Laws of Florida). To carry out this mandate, the Everglades Drainage District constructed a system of canals, drains, levees, dikes, dams, locks and reservoirs.

Summary:     This collection consists of 27 black-and-white images taken by William Thomas Russ of the various locks and facilities connected with the Palm Beach Canal, which drained the northern sections of the Everglades near Lake Okeechobee out to the Atlantic Ocean through West Palm Beach.
