Biographical/Historical:     William Oglethorpe Girardeau (1820-1869) was born in Liberty County, Georgia, and moved with his wife, Harriet Louisa Brown, to Monticello in Jefferson County, Florida, prior to 1852. Their first child was William Montgomery (1852-1909), who put Monticello on the map as the top watermelon supplier in the world by the 1890s. The Girardeau family continued to thrive in agricultural endeavors, and the Girardeau House at 950 East Washington Street in Monticello is now a national historic site.
