Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Department of Military Affairs in 1973 to succeed the Military Department (Chapter 73-93, Laws of Florida). The head of the Department of Military Affairs is the Adjutant General. The Department and the Adjutant General control the Florida units of the National Guard; supervise all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transport and subsist any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Department and the Adjutant General maintain their headquarters in St. Augustine. The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws).

Summary:     This series consists of circulars issued by the Office of the Adjutant General pertaining to the Department of Military Affairs and its predecessor, the Military Department. The series includes original printed circulars for the years 1907-1912, 1916, and 1923; circulars in bound volumes for the years 1923 through 1940; and microfilm copies of circulars for the years 1946 to 1973.

    The Office of the Adjutant General issued these circulars to provide information on topics of interest to Florida's military forces, the National Guard, and its predecessor, the Florida State Troops. The circulars are generally of an advisory nature and include information on such diverse subjects as the proper and improper wearing of uniforms, weapon's instruction and maintenance, military record keeping, safekeeping of supplies, proceedings of the National Militia Board, the Florida Naval Militia, the typhoid vaccine, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, pay and retirement information, and military education.
