Biographical/Historical:     Francis Philip Fleming was born in Panama Park (Jacksonville), Florida in 1841. At age 19, he entered the Confederate Army and served with the Second Florida Regiment. He took part in numerous battles in Virginia. Fleming returned to Jacksonville after the war, where he studied law. He gained a state-wide reputation for his legal work and for extolling Confederate ideals. He served for many years as a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee. In 1888, Fleming became the fifteenth Governor of Florida. When Fleming left office, he returned to Jacksonville to practice law and died there in 1908.

Alvan S. Harper was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 1847. Between 1870 and 1884, he was a professional photographer in Philadelphia. A chance meeting with Judge J.T. Bernard of Tallahassee, who was in Philadelphia as a commissioner from Florida to the 1876 Centennial Exposition, may have led to Harper's move to Tallahassee in 1884. Harper was soon advertising that he would take "artistic photographs" in his first studio, a room in the house he was renting. He moved twice before buying a house and building his own studio where he worked between 1889 and his death in 1911.

Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a photograph of Florida Governor Francis P. Fleming, taken by Tallahassee photographer Alvin Harper.
