Biographical/Historical:     On 10 June 1948, 65 residents of Jacksonville, Florida, organized the Jacksonville Outboard Boat Club (JOC), which incorporated on 17 January 1950. Over the years, membership grew to hundreds and the club featured in several national boating and recreational magazines. The JOC held a series of annual races and cruises and, starting in 1953, participated in the annual Gator Bowl parade. The first JOC clubhouse was on the Trout River next to the Jacksonville Zoo. When the city expanded the zoo in 1957, the clubhouse moved to the Chaseville section of Arlington in Jacksonville. A social club as much as a boating club, the JOC hosted numerous socials, dances, and Christmas parties. Memberships ranged from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and New Jersey, and included singer Pat Boone, several U.S. Senators, and a former Alabama governor. The JOC dissolved in 1986.

Summary:     This collection consists of papers, photographs, and films documenting the Jacksonville Outboard Boat Club throughout its existence. The papers include membership rosters, maps, newspaper clippings (1953-1986), and a typed manuscript of a history of the club. Approximately 200 photographs dating from 1949 to 1958 depict cruises, boat races, social events, camp excursions, and various river scenes. Thirty home movies (nine 16mm films, twenty-one 8mm films; all color and silent) dating from 1953 to 1967 show camping trips, boat races, the Orange Bowl, the Gator Bowl, Jacksonville, Key West, Tomoka State Park, Ocala, Daytona, Leesburg, Lake Harney, Suwannee River, Mexico, and the Outer Banks (North Carolina). JOC founding members Hazel and Clarence Lovendahl created most of the films and photographs.
