Biographical/Historical:     The Pelt and Comerford families were early landowners in Jackson County, Florida and were connected through marriage. Jonathan Pelt was born in 1815 in Craven County, North Carolina. After moving to Florida, Pelt became a blacksmith and carpenter in Jackson County. In 1867, he and William H. Taylor built a mill at Merritt's Mill Pond that was used to grind corn until the early 1900s. At the same time, Michael and John Comerford were farmers in Jackson County. In 1859, John Pelt married Susan Comerford, the sister of Michael and John. In 1875, Zachariah Pelt married Delila Comerford.

Summary:     This collection consists of a small number of documents of the Pelt and Comerford families of Jackson County, Florida. The documents include an 1841 store ledger; a land grant to Michael Comerford dated 6 January 1855; a land grant to John Comerford also dated 6 January 1855; an 1870 store ledger; and a letter dated 19 October 1942 from M. M. Hughey regarding Jack Holland Pelt.
