The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     The Department of Children and Families was created by Section 20.19, Florida Statutes, in the 1996 legislative section.  The department's secretary is appointed by the Governor. The agency is responsible for the safety, well-being, and welfare of abused, neglected, and abandoned children, the elderly, people with disabilites, and those suffering from mental illness and/or substance abuse problems. It also maintains partnerships with local communities in assisting people to become economically self-sufficient, thereby creating stable families and communities. The department has the overall responsibility of all family services offered by the state.
Summary:     This series consists of study files of the Study Commission on Employment Opportunities and Self Sufficiency, established by Chapter 92-58 (HB 2379, s. 39, 1992) to "develop recommendations for reducing welfare dependency and costs, primarily by enabling current recipients to become economically self-sufficient."  The study developed the overall framework and direction for what became Florida's WAGES program (Work and Gain Economic Self Sufficiency).  This series includes
materials pertaining to: Contracts, Resources, Administration, Surveys, Budget and Commission meeting video tape, audio tapes and compact discs.
