Biographical/Historical:     Patrick Houstoun (alternatively spelled Houston) was a prominent military leader in Leon County, Florida. The son of Florida planter Edward Houstoun of Tallahassee, Patrick was born on September 30, 1837, in Savannah, Georgia. In 1838 his family moved to Tallahassee, where they ran a large labor farm in the area that is today Myers Park, south of the Capitol. During the Civil War, Patrick Houstoun commanded the Kilcrease Light Artillery, a volunteer unit that fought in the Battle of Natural Bridge. After the Civil War, Houstoun established Lakeland Stock Farm and served as a state senator. From 1893 to 1897 he served as Florida's Adjutant General. He died in 1901.

Summary:     This collection consists of materials documenting the Houstoun family of Tallahassee, Florida, and their interest in local events. It contains photographs of the Houstoun family, including the burial of Patrick Houstoun in 1901, several portraits of Anne Collins Houstoun taken by Tallahassee photographer Alvan Harper, and Lt. Claudia Houstoun at Florida State College for Women. There are also photographs depicting school plays and Florida Governor William Bloxham lying in state in 1911. The collection also includes a program and newspaper article for the 1924 Florida Centennial.
