Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) is a non-profit organization administered by Florida State University to gather, interpret, and disseminate information critical to the conservation of Florida's biological diversity. In 1981, The Nature Conservancy founded FNAI as part of its international network of natural heritage programs. Funding is provided through contracts and grants under state and federal agencies such as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

FNAI staff continually build and maintain a comprehensive Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database of Florida's biological resources, including over 28,000 element occurrences of rare plants, rare animals, and high-quality natural communities. FNAI's database serves as the primary source for information on Florida's conservation lands, including GIS boundaries and statistics for over 1,600 federal, state, local, and private managed areas. The database also includes information on Florida Forever environmental land acquisition projects.

Summary:     This series consists of reports and supporting documentation regarding historic vegetation studies of Tate's Hell State Forest, which constitute a survey of the "biological landscape" of Tate's Hell. The series includes information on current and historic vegetation and provides recommendations and guidelines for restoring historic vegetation of the area. This series also includes audio cassette tapes of oral history interviews with residents (now deceased) discussing area history, environment, people, and events.
